Where Voice Meets Community!

Welcome to The Fish and Bear Network, a movement that’s bringing back the oldest form of human connection: storytelling in its purest, most spontaneous form.

What we’re about

It’s time to truly connect again in the way that only sitting in real life, with real people, telling real-life stories can.

Storytelling is the capability that we have used to connect with each other and create this modern world. And yet somehow, especially on social media, we have neutered storytelling into story-selling and mostly share opinions rather than real-life experiences.

Our events are simple, timed, unprepared story prompts that help everyone who listens connect to our unique and yet relatable experiences. Often, the stories told are intensely funny, sometimes emotional, but always interesting.

I call them games rather than exercises because they are fun and often frivolous, but there’s no competition and no one loses – except those who don’t attend! 😀

The Evening

Arrive before the start at the Parlor Room, Church of the Valley.  We have a sweet room and a lovely courtyard for our use, so please arrive on time so that we can start promptly at 7 pm. The circle of storytellers is limited so that the exercise rounds don’t take too long. So if you are keen to be a part of the storytelling, then you should try to arrive early. It would be disruptive to make changes to the circle, so if you plan to leave early or arrive late, please attend as a listener.

Let the Games begin. We will start with a couple of simple story rounds for the storytellers. The first is almost always ‘The Story of your name’ because everyone is the world’s expert in living their life with their name. As general rule, we will have up to 12 storytellers, and everyone else will get to be listeners. Our exercises and games aren’t about performance or entertainment, as the truth sounds different, so everyone can be a storyteller.

Break! We host these events to encourage connection and community, so this break is there to keep it light and cheerful. So stretch your legs or stand in line for the 🚽 at the other side of the courtyard.

Part Two. Now that we all know this evening’s storytellers, it is time to play a couple more story games to complete the structured part of the event.

Freedom! All structure is over! Feel free to chat for a bit while we clear up and clear out. As it is a community church space, we will need to ensure that we leave the space as we found it.

Alcohol and smoking of any type are prohibited at this location.
